As officers manhandled patrons, police lost control of the raid and spontaneous, violent demonstrations broke out. On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan. In 1966, the state overturned previous regulations by the New York State Liquor Authority that made serving liquor to "known or suspected LGBT individuals" a punishable offense. But because "gay behavior" and the wearing of "gender-inappropriate clothing" was still illegal, police raids of gay bars remained prevalent. In New York City, engaging in public affection (like holding hands, kissing or dancing) with someone of the same sex was illegal, and LGBTQIA+ people sought social refuge at gay bars and clubs. The year was 1969, and it was not a safe nor welcoming time for members of the queer community. The most popular version of the flag was introduced in 1979, which traded in the indigo and turquoise stripes for one royal blue stripe, making it a more simplified, six-stripe flag. The flag has undergone several revisions, including the addition by Baker of a lavender stripe to symbolize diversity, and more "unofficial" riffs on the design to include stripes for marginalized people of color, transgender people and those living with HIV/AIDS. While each subset of the LGBTQIA+ community has its own flag, perhaps the most iconic is the rainbow flag, also known as the "gay pride flag" or the "LGBTQ pride flag," which was created by artist and activist Gilbert Baker in 1978.īaker designed the rainbow flag with eight symbolic colors:
